{"id":48,"date":"2017-06-26T14:22:15","date_gmt":"2017-06-26T18:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/p3rx.org\/news\/?p=48"},"modified":"2017-06-26T14:22:15","modified_gmt":"2017-06-26T18:22:15","slug":"drug-topics-bill-would-protect-compounded-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/p3rx.org\/news\/drug-topics-bill-would-protect-compounded-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Drug Topics: Bill Would Protect Compounded Drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bill Would Protect Compounded Drugs<br \/>\nThe IACP is excited about new legislation that could help compounding pharmacists.<\/p>\n<p>June 16, 2017 By Christine Blank<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP)<\/strong> said it strongly supports a bipartisan bill that would protect patients\u2019 access to compounded medications.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, <strong>HR 2871, The Preserving Patient Access to Compounded Medications Act of 2017<\/strong>, was introduced by <strong>Congressmen Morgan Griffith (R-VA) and Henry Cuellar (D-TX)<\/strong> on June 12.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/drugtopics.modernmedicine.com\/drug-topics\/news\/how-necc-case-changed-compounding-pharmacy\">Related article: How the NECC Case Changed Compounding Pharmacy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bill will \u201chelp clarify the Drug Quality &amp; Security Act (DQSA) in a way that will better align the statute with congressional intent and better balance public safety and patient access,\u201d said Baylor Rice, RPh, President of IACP.<\/p>\n<p>When Congress originally passed the DQSA, legislators \u201ccame together in a bipartisan and bicameral fashion to make clear that pharmacists\u2019 ability to provide compounded medications for a physician\u2019s administration to or treatment of a patient within their practice should be left to the states,\u201d IACP said.<\/p>\n<p>IACP, partnering with the DQSA Coalition, has worked with the FDA and Congress on improving the agency\u2019s compounding policies in a way that better balances public safety with patient access to critical medications, according to the group. \u201cUnfortunately, despite these efforts, FDA continues to misinterpret the DQSA and assert regulatory authority over the practice of pharmacy and medicine in a way Congress never intended,\u201d IACP said.<\/p>\n<p>In the last two appropriations bills (fiscal years 2016 and 2017), Congress included language directing the FDA to alter their policies on compounding to align with congressional intent and the language of the statute, the group said. \u201cFDA has, to date, ignored those congressional directives and continues to substitute their desired regulatory authority over compounding,\u201d IACP said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/drugtopics.modernmedicine.com\/drug-topics\/news\/could-compounding-pharmacists-solve-sodium-bicarbonate-shortage\">Related article: Could Compounding Pharmacists Solve the Sodium Bicarbonate Shortage?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once enacted, the FDA, compounding pharmacies, medical providers, and patients will have much greater certainty as to where the line between pharmacy compounding and drug manufacturing lies, according to the group. IACP said that this will better balance public safety and patient access to the medications they need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s vital that Congress support HR 2871 in order to preserve patient access to compounded medications by directing FDA to act within Congressional intent,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n<p>More than 300 compounding pharmacists traveled to Washington, D.C. this week to urge them to cosponsor HR 2871.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bill Would Protect Compounded Drugs The IACP is excited about new legislation that could help compounding pharmacists.
